Rural and Remote Health Activity Report, January 2008 - June 2009



About Us

Rural and Remote Health was initiated in 1998 by a grant to Deakin University from the Department of Human Services, Rural health Division, Victoria, Australia. The initial vision was to serve rural and remote communities throughout the world by providing a community forum and specific health-related information. Since then, our one-person team of journal manager has grown to include:
  • an international editorial board
  • an editor-in-Chief
  • regional editors
  • regional editorial panels
  • a software developer
  • a production editor
  • a Journal executive committee
  • an international reviewer panel

Editor-in-Chief
Paul Worley, Dean of the School of Medicine at Flinders University, based in Adelaide, Australia is the Editor-in-Chief of Rural and Remote Health. Paul is a rural doctor and, as Editor, shapes and guides the journal, oversees the review process and supports and advises authors, taking an active interest in the progress of each article in production.

European Regional Editor
Christos Lionis acted as the manager and medical director of the Spili Health Centre, a pilot for the University of Crete Primary Care Centre, for 9 years, getting experiences as a clinician and researcher in the field of Primary Health Care and General Practice. He is now an Associate Professor of Social and Family Medicine at the Department of Social Medicine, University of Crete.

African Regional Editor
Ian Couper is Professor of Rural Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He is also Principal Specialist (Rural Medicine), in the North West Province of South Africa. He is a trained family physicain. He spent ten years practising in a remote rural hospital in nothern KwaZuluNatal province.

Australasian Regional Editors

Amanda Barnard  is Associate Dean of the School of General Practice, Rural and Indigenous Health at the Australian National University Medical School, and Foundation Head of the Rural Clinical School. She works as a GP in Braidwood, a small rural town in south-east New South Wales. While her interests include rural medical education, interprofessional learning and health service delivery, she has a particular interest in the primary care management of respiratory illness.

Timothy Skinner is the Director of Research, Flinders University Rural Clinical School in rural Renmark, South Australia. He is a UK trained health psychologist who moved to Australia in 2007 and has worked in rural/remote Australia since 2008.  His clinical practice and research background is in chronic disease care, especially diabetes, with a core interest in clinical communication skills. He has an enthusiasm for rural and remote health research.
North American Regional Editors

Bob Bowman has found yet another distributional medical education home at the ATSU School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona. He is a Professor, adds the family practice and rural perspective to curricula, and contributes to admissions and to small group teaching activities. He will work with medical students and faculty at ten underserved site training locations from Hawaii to Brooklyn. Judith Kulig is a Professor in the Nursing Program within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. She has devoted her research program to understanding rural health issues specifically addressing unique groups who live in rural areas, nursing practice in rural and remote Canada and community resiliency in rural communities. Judith is Chair of the Canadian Rural Health Research Society for which she was one of the founding members.
Asian Regional Editor
Masatoshi Matsumoto is an associate professor of community medicine at
Hiroshima University, Japan. He is a general practitioner who worked for
some years in the least populated mountain village in rural Japan. He has
taught rural health at Jichi Medical University, the Japanese medical school
founded solely for producing rural doctors, for more than ten years. His
academic interests are rural health policy, rural medical education, medical
anthropology and rural community-based epidemiology.
Production Editor
Melbourne-based Jennifer Richmond offers expert editorial assistance to authors at each stage in the publication process. Jen works with some authors on English-language improvement or assists with re-writing before the submitted paper goes for review. After review, she offers help to authors to make the changes required by reviewers, then copyedits accepted papers to journal style. Jen is responsible for editorial development and generates information for authors.

Journal Manager
Jenny Bigelow has been with the journal for 10 years. She works from Geelong, Victoria, and deals with the day-to-day running of the journal. She manages the smooth flow of articles through the publication process and coordinates development of the journal site. She is also involved in formatting articles, tables and graphics for Web publication and is available to advise authors and answer user queries. She is the friendly response from the ejrh email address.
