position: Professor Emerita

My program of research is focused on adaptation and self-management of chronic illness in rural dwellers. Within this broad research area, I have expertise in community-based participatory research strategies; telehealth delivery of chronic illness self-management skills information; issues affecting rural health care providers; and development and implementation of research studies in sparsely populated areas. I have been engaged in numerous studies including principal investigator (PI) on two federally funded studies conducted in partnership with the Center for Asbestos Related Disease, in Libby, Montana. We explored the bio-psychosocial heath status of persons exposed to Libby amphibole asbestos and their knowledge and acceptance of research. I have served as co-investigator on a large Internet-based intervention study to increase adaptation and chronic illness self-management in isolated rural women and co-investigator on a 3-state study to explore rural nurses access to, and use of, research in their practice. For several years, I was the Associate Director, Pilot Core Director, and Administrative Core Director for the Center for Research on Chronic Health Conditions in Rural Dwellers in the College of Nursing at Montana State University. I am the editor or co-editor of five editions of Rural Nursing: Concepts, Theory and Practice (Springer Publishing).
